Italian is a Romance language spoken as the native language by
about 65 million people in Italy, Switzerland, San Marino and Vatican City. It is also an
official language of Malta and part of the official languages of Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Croatia, France (in Corsica), Slovenia and Spain.
Italian is closely related to French and other regional Romance languages such as Catalan or Portuguese. As a result of centuries of contact with Germanic languages during the Middle Ages in which it was not always clear where Italy started or ended (the Italian peninsula being roughly triangular in shape), Italian has many words that are cognates with Germanic words
Italian has been used to communicate since ancient times. The Roman Empire was built on Latin and Greek, which were both derived from Ancient Greek (Ancient Greek: Αλεξανδρεια), but Italian was also widely spoken during this period. Many other languages have evolved from Italian over time, including French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian.

You can start from wherever you want - whether that's having just started learning Italian or being a more advanced learner. You don't need any previous knowledge of the language to get started; all we ask is that you're willing to work hard!
